2008-03-10
MONTREAL, Monday, March 10, 2008 – Mr. Farrel Miller, owner, and Mr. Martin Routhier, president, of the new Club de hockey junior de Montréal are proud to reveal the logo, name and jersey of the new franchise of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), which will take the ice at the Verdun Auditorium starting in 2008-2009. Players from the current version of the Club de hockey junior de Montréal will be available at the press conference to answer questions from the Montreal media.
The Club de hockey junior de Montréal has chosen burgundy and white as its official colours. The logo consists simply of the city’s name adorned with a puck. The uniform’s classic, clean lines are a throwback to vintage Montreal teams. During today’s unveiling, two players from the current team will take the opportunity to wear the colours of the Club de hockey junior de Montréal.
Following an absence of five seasons, the next league campaign will see the long-awaited return of the QMJHL to Montreal. "I am passionate about hockey and I share the same vision as QMJHL commissioner Gilles Courteau. I’m extremely pleased to be able to provide junior hockey for our fans in Greater Montreal," stated Farrel Miller, owner of the Club de hockey junior de Montréal. The franchise, which will be reborn at the Verdun Auditorium, has a 3-year agreement with the municipality. The Auditorium will be undergoing major renovations in order to welcome the new team.
A competitive team as of year one
The Club de hockey junior de Montréal is built around a core of talented young players including five who have been drafted and already belong to National Hockey League (NHL) teams. "Our last few years at the draft have been fruitful and we are very confident that we will be able to count on having a competitive club next year. Our development years are behind us and at the very least, we are now aiming for a playoff spot," stated Martin Routhier, president of the Club de hockey junior de Montréal.
With a population base of 3.6 million people, Montreal was the logical choice for a new franchise. "Hockey has a special place in the hearts of Montrealers and we would like the Club de hockey junior de Montréal to find a spot there too. We will be offering an exciting standard of play and we want the fans to catch junior hockey fever in Montreal," added Mr. Routhier. In his opinion, there is sufficient interest in hockey to support the new Montreal franchise. "Season tickets are already on sale and we are inviting current and future fans to purchase them now on our website at www.juniordemontreal.com," confirmed Martin Routhier.
